Cleaning A Flooded Basement To Avoid Mold Problems

What to do when you have a flooded basement. If any one spot in your home is going to become the target for water damage, it’s your basement.  The reasoning is easy to see….water flows wherever gravity takes it (read: downhill) and basements are the single lowest spot in any building.  In fact, studies show that 98% or more of basements will suffer from some form of water damage, making it a virtual certainty.

Unfortunately, far too many people make the mistake of allowing water to sit in their basement for prolonged periods of time, thinking that the problems will somehow magically repair itself.  This is not the case.  Any type of water damage will not get better on its own; quite the reverse actually, it will only get worse with time, continuing to cause damage to your structure and setting the stage for all kinds of long term problems, the most notorious of which is mold.

Basements tend to be damp as a rule, and any excess water only aggravates the problem.  If there is sufficient moisture found in a given area, say above a level of 50%, then mold becomes a certainty.  If you experience any kind of flooded basement problems, then you want to begin the cleanup process right away.

Flooded basement cleanup is pretty much the same as handling any other water damage issue, the excess water must be removed and everything completely dried out.  Only through complete and total drying can you hope to avoid mold problems.

Water can be removed through the use of a mop and towels, a wet/dry vacuum unit, or in the most severe cases, a submersible pump.  Hint: do not attempt to use a regular vacuum cleaner to remove water; you’ll only ruin the unit and put yourself at considerable risk for personal injury through electrocution.

If the flooded basement has several feet of water involved, then a heavy duty pump will be required.  The water should be pumped out slowly and steadily, at the rate of about a third a day.  Any faster may result in the weakening of the foundation walls, which could cause them to crack and even collapse (which of course would defeat the entire purpose of your repair efforts).  Remember, a rate of about a third a day should be more than sufficient enough to remove the excess water in plenty of time.

Subsequent flooded basement cleanup efforts will include getting air circulating throughout the damaged area.  Open all windows and doors, and make use of as many fans and other air moving devices that you can find.  It may take a day or more for all residual moisture to be removed.

Flooded basement cleanup can be a hazardous process, particularly of your basement happens to be nothing more than a crawlspace, or if there are electrical appliances operating there.  Don’t ever run the risk of mixing water and electricity.  Be sure to shut off the utilities at their source.  If you don’t know how to do so, don’t guess.  Call a professional.
