Water damage due to faulty appliances is very common this time of year. No rhyme or reason to it, it just seems to happen. Most appliances in the home should be replaced every 3 to 5 years, but if you keep an eye on them and make small repairs when needed, appliances can last a lot longer than that. This not only saves you a load of money in appliance shopping, it also saves you a load of money and hassle in regard to water damage. Appliance maintenance is crucial in water damage prevention.
Appliance maintenance doesn’t really require much work. A quick look once a month or so is all you should need to do to make sure your appliances don’t need any repairs. Here are some things to look for:
** Check hoses to make sure they aren’t cracked or deteriorating in any way. Hoses are cheap and easy to replace, but they can cause a lot of water damage when they fail. Consider all of the machines that use hoses – washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator – and even some coffee making machines. When hoses break on these appliances, they have the potential to cause a lot of water damage.
** Valves are another area of appliances that can cause problems. Valves can range from a spigot on your refrigerator’s door for water to a valve on your hot water heater. Take a peek at these from time to time to make sure they are securely fastened. Leaky valves are a common water damage problem that often turn into mold damage problems. Again, these are easily replaced if you find they aren’t functioning properly.
** It’s not a technical term, but consider the “shell” of your appliances. This would include things like the tub in your washing machine, the cylinder of your hot water tank, the shell of your dishwashing machine or refrigerator/freezer, etc. Look for cracks or any other damage. These typically hold the most water and can cause the most damage to your home if they don’t work as they should. Like the others, these are much cheaper to replace or repair than to deal with if they break completely.
Even with consistent monitoring, appliances will fail and cause water damage. When that happens, contact a professional water damage restoration company with decades of combined experience in all water damage areas. Our water damage teams are available 24/7 to help you!
