Hard Water Causes Water Damage
What is hard water and how does it cause water damage? Hard water is water that has a high mineral content. It is formed when water collects deposits of minerals like calcium, limestone, and dolomite. Where can you find hard water? Pretty much everywhere in the US. That white stuff you see around your faucets and pipes are proof of it. Unless you aren’t tapped in to community water sources, you probably have hard water.
For the most part, hard water is harmless. It doesn’t affect our health to consume hard water. In fact, we receive a lot of our calcium that way. However, hard water can do major damage to the plumbing in our homes. The mineral build up in pipes causes the pipe’s structure to break down – which in turn can cause the pipe to crack, leak, and/or ultimately burst. Bursting pipes cause some of the most significant amounts of water damage that we see on a day to day basis. All of this applies to hoses that your appliances use as well.
The best way to avoid hard water related water damage is to prevent it. While we can’t control the water that goes in and out of all the water in our home, there are things we can do to reverse the damage of hard water. One way is to use water softeners. Water softeners use salt to disintegrate the minerals causing the damage. Since some people are sensitive to salt, it’s recommended that you have your water tested before and after using water softeners.
Water conditioners can also be used. Water conditioner devices vary. They can come in the form of a typical water filter to a machine that uses electric pulses to change the minerals’ contents. Many people use water conditioners for their drinking water, washing machines, and in the bathroom in order to avoid consumptions of minerals they may be sensitive to. In addition, they save their pipes and hoses where this water is used from unsightly hard water stains and potential water damage.
