Houston flash flooding, April 18, 2016.Almost 17 inches of rain inundated parts of the Houston area early Monday morning, April 18, 2016, triggering flash flooding that brought the city and surrounding areas to a near-standstill.

The flash flood warning remains in effect until 2:00 PM EST for Wharton, Washington, Harris, Walker, Waller. Galveston, chambers, Grimes, northern Brazoria, Fort Bend. Trinity, Central Houston, Colorado, Liberty, San Jacinto. Montgomery, Southeastern Brazos, Polk, Eastern Madison and Austin counties.

Rain rates are decreasing, but additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible in the area throughout the afternoon.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams as well as other drainage and low lying areas.  If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately. Residents living in those areas should take immediate precautions to protect their family, pets and property.

A flash flood warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.
