How Can I Prevent Water Damage?

Before reading any further into this article, I would like to advise and pointedly state this: water damage, no matter how many cautionary steps you take to prevent it, will never be 100 percent guaranteed to be stopped. On the other hand, I want to quickly say that the following protocols that are ways that can decrease the changes of water damage significantly.

A leaking hot water tank can cause water damage to your home.Water damage occurs often times in the dark corners of our homes that we do not think to check. These include pipes, unattended equipment and so on.

Common places that should often be checked to eliminate the chance of leaking pipes are:

  1. The sink area/shower/toilets: the drainage system is usually not a sophisticated system. It, as most other appliances with water, uses the power of gravity, so that water that falls into the drainage pipe will continue on its way due to gravity. It is very simple. Unfortunately, as simple as it sounds, it is also very simple to clog this pipe and, as gravity entails, what goes up must come down. This means that if your sink drainage pipe is blocked, water will force its way out through small holes in the joints, causing leaks. Be sure to regularly check your drainage pipes and clean them when appropriate.
  2. The Refrigerator/Dishwasher: These two kitchen accessories are found in most homes. They are essentials to a kitchen life. Yet, it is amazing how many overlook the dangers that these appliances have in terms of water damage. Both use water to perform its daily tasks, and of course, the pipes that connect the water source with a refrigerator and a dishwasher can be faulty and have leaks. As usual, be careful and periodically inspect these pipes to ensure that they are of a certain standard.
  3.  Basement (Sump pump, water heater): The basement is hurt most by its underground location when it comes to water damage. Outside water will always naturally hit the basement first due to gravity. As a result, it is essential for all homes with a basement to install a sump pump to effectively pump out the incoming water from the basement. Unfortunately, there are too many cases where this sump pump is deemed ineffective due to a power outage. This is why it is almost always necessary to have a battery-operated backup sump pumps in case of such an emergency. As usual, periodically check these pumps to make sure that they are operating properly. Also, water heaters are another common cause of water damage. They usually last for about 8 years so be sure to know when that 8 year time period is overdue and inspect to make sure that there are no leaks. It is not uncommon to install a drain near a water heater in case a leak does go unchecked for years.
  4. Clogged gutters can cause water damage to your home.Roof/Other barriers to the outside world: The roof is the first line of defense to a home when it comes to rain and storms. This is why it is unarguably important to inspect the roof to make sure that there are no holes that water can leak into. Also, it is essential to clear the gutters from any obstructing objects, such as leaves and twigs. This is because clogged gutters can lead to poor drainage, and as explained above, the potential of gravity will drive the water to go somewhere, and unfortunately, that usually means inside your home. Also, be sure to inspect doors and windows for any gaps that can be caused from temperature changes.

These four general areas are the most common reasons for water damage. Again, as stated above, there are many more precautionary steps that would probably take me hundreds of pages to list them properly. Know that when it comes to protecting your home and family from the hazards of water damage, it all comes down to just simple common sense.
