Ice Storms In The Southeast

Ice Damage

A historic ice storm is expected to slam the southeast over the next few days.  Weather forecasters say to expect downed trees, power outages, road closures, airline delays and cancellations.  A state of emergency has been issued for the entire state of Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Virginia due to this vicious storm system.

Ice storms are extremely dangerous and our thoughts go out to those experiencing the effects of this storm.  These states have asked that you do not travel unless absolutely necessary.  Their concern is not only icy roads making travel dangerous, but also because ice accumulations on tree branches and power lines can cause them to come crashing down at any moment.  Even a half inch of ice can bring down a large tree branch.

If you lose power, try to keep your cell phone charge in case of an emergency.  Obviously you can’t charge your phone during a power outage, but you can refrain from playing games on your phone or making unnecessary calls or texts.  I know, I know…my phone is like my right hand these days, but it can be a life saver in the event of an emergency.  If you do have a generator, do not bring it indoors as it becomes a carbon monoxide hazard.  It should be at least 20 feet from your house, windows, doors and vents.

Other areas in the southeast and northeast are expecting anywhere from 3 to 12 inches of snow.  Heavy snowfalls this year have caused thousands of power outage all over the country but especially the northeast.  Check our tips for avoiding potential frozen pipes that can cause flooding.  Keep food, fresh water, flashlights and batteries away from any area that could possibly be flooded.

If you do experience storm damage or flooding issues, call us and we will get someone out to help as soon as possible.

Please be safe!
