Identifying Water Damage in Your Basement

Flooded basement.basement flood is something many of us will have to deal with at least once in our lifetime. So, it is just as important to be able to identify water damage when it happens.

What to Inspect

The first step in identifying water damage is to check the most obvious of areas in your home and basement. If you know where to look then it will make it that much easier to identify the damage and what needs to be done.

The first place to look is at the plumbing lines and systems. Inspect these lines to make sure there are no leaks or the plumbing is not compromised in any way. Even if these pipes are not in the basement they still can cause flooding and damage in other parts of the house.

Inspect the entire basement area especially the hot water heater, which has a lifespan of 10-13 years.  Look around the area of the hot water heater and check for water stains or a collection of water.  The sump pump is also a piece of equipment that needs regular maintenance.  Check to see if the sump pump is still working by manually starting the pump to make sure it is draining water away from the foundation of your home.  Make sure you have a back-up sump pump or an extra battery in case of a power outage. Check around the area of the sump pump for water stains.

Inspect the caulking around the walls of your basement for any leakage or cracked caulking. Looking at problem spots such as corners of walls, floors, ceilings, doors and windows will help you find the water damage sooner.  Water from downspouts should flow away from the foundation. Look for deterioration of sills and moldings around windows and doors.

Finally, check around the outside foundation of your home. This is where you can see water damage before if comes into your home. Check the plumbing on the outside of your house since these are most prone to freezing first, which can cause water damage inside of the house.
