Inspect Your Home
Water damage doesn’t run on a timer. There’s no set time or place. It can happen anywhere at any time. Water damage doesn’t just happen from outdoor forces either, water damage has the ability to wreck your home from the inside. The key to avoiding all kinds of water damage is prevention. Here are a few steps to prevent water damage in your home or business.
While working on my prevention checklist I like to start outdoors, usually starting with the gutters. Gutters clogged with debris can cause overflow which may result in water damage. This is risky because the water damage will slide right down the side of the home, so it has the potential to go from your roof all the way to the basement. Next, we move to the roof. If you notice missing or damaged shingles, make sure to replace them. If you’re unsure, go up in the attic and check for light shining in. Water entering from the attic could have the same effect as the overflowing gutters, gravity would pull it all downwards.
After you’ve checked the roof and gutters, take your inspection indoors. This portion of the inspection is just checking for leaks. Leaks can appear in appliances, hoses, sinks, water heaters, and more. Leaks that are overlooked for more than a week or so may create a real problem for the home owner. If water damage starts to take place, there’s always a possibility for mold as well. While inside, also check your seals. Broken doors and window seals may not seem like a huge deal, but never underestimate the power of water. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
