Preparing for the Storms of the Spring Season

You’d be surprised how many water damage restoration specialists are called out for complex and expensive restoration jobs that never would have been necessary if the homeowner had prepared their home and surrounding property for stormy weather. In the long run, prevention costs a lot more than damage repair costs. If you can avoid the inconvenience and impending risk of water damage, you’d be a fool to pass up the opportunity. Why wait for a disaster when you can keep one from happening in the first place?

Your Property

Nobody has fun trimming trees, but it’s much less fun to have them crash through your ceiling in a storm. Keep all the trees on your property trimmed back to avoid any damage that may be caused by broken tree limbs. After you’ve cut off the unwanted parts of the tree, make sure you dispose of the wood. Spring is tornado season, and you don’t want to provide a tornado with any ammunition.

Make sure you don’t leave a lot of objects out in the open. Things like bicycles, wagons, and scooters should be put away. If you know storm threats are rising, you should bring your patio furniture indoors for safe storage. You may love the way it looks on your porch, but you won’t love the way it looks when it’s flying through your window.

Your Crawlspace

Your crawlspace provides access to the foundation of your home. When your crawlspace is damaged, the problem is going to go from the ground up. Before you know it, you’ll have water in your walls and your flooring will start coming loose. One of the worst things about crawlspaces is that your house provides so much shade that water cannot easily escape. Once it’s there, it’s there, and unless you have a pump installed, you may not be able to prevent the accumulation of that water.

Your crawlspace needs to be waterproofed. Accumulating water can cause the wood to rot, which will damage the integrity of your entire home. Crawlspaces are also an excellent place for mold and fungi to grow, and this is harmful to your family. Mold is capable of reproducing at earth shattering speeds, so it’s not worth taking chances. You can’t live in a home that’s rotting from the bottom and filled with harmful microbes. Fixing that issue can cost anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the severity of the damage. Waterproofing is necessary, and the investment will always be significantly less than the alternative.

Your Roof and Attic

Sagging roof caused by water damage. It goes without saying that a bad roof won’t survive a second in an intense storm. So many homeowners encounter preventable water damage due to an improperly maintained roof during the rainy season. If you’ve patched any small leaks, it’s time to get them fixed the right way. The integrity of your roof is crucial. If your roof is in shambles and it needs to be replaced, you may find that the situation is a double edged sword. While new roofs are very costly, they also add a tremendous amount of value to your home.

You’ll also need to make sure your rain gutters are in good shape. The water hitting your roof needs to be able to drain away properly. You don’t want that water to go right under your house, so you need to make sure it’s piped far enough away from the foundation of your property to avoid causing damage.

If you find any issues when you’re inspecting your roof, you need to check your attic to see what’s going on. That’s most likely where the water went once it permeated the surface of your roof. There’s no use in repairing your roof if there’s water damage in your attic. All you’re doing is trapping the damage, allowing it to seep down into your walls.

Windows and Doors

Make sure your windows and doors are working the way they’re supposed to. Windows that don’t close properly or have damaged panes can let water into your house. Exterior doors need proper weather strips to prevent water from seeping underneath them. Your entire home needs to be sealed tightly from the elements.

Evaluate Your Flooding Risk

Do you live near a body of water? Are you in a flood zone? Does the street you live on tend to flood during periods of high rain? If you have a reason to believe that you’re susceptible to flooding, you need to do everything possible to prevent that from happening to you. Many people erroneously assume that their homeowner’s insurance will cover flooding caused by a storm, but unless you’re paying additional coverage for it, you’ll probably find yourself out of luck. Consider purchasing additional flood insurance in the event that worst comes to worst.

The only surefire way to prevent your home from flooding is to have your entire home raised above the flood level, or to move into an area at high elevation. This may be exorbitant for some people. At the very least, waterproof what you can and have a specialist evaluate your home to see if you have any practical options in terms of keeping your property safe from flood waters.
