Preventing Water Damage Saves Money

Water damage is a threat that homeowners and businesses need to be aware of by knowing the causes and knowing how to prevent it.  Recognizing the signs and routinely inspecting areas that are prone to water damage is the first step in preventing it.

Commonly, water damage starts from appliances that are malfunctioning, have worn out parts, or simply need to be replaced.  Washing machines, refrigerator freezers, dishwashers, hot water heaters, air conditioners all fit into this category and can be the source of water damage. These appliances can suddenly leak causing water damage.

Preventing water damage associated with appliances requires routinely checking pipes, joints and connections for any signs of wear and tear or loose parts that might leak.

Toilets also need maintenance at the first sign of water continuing to run, or leaks around the base.  Check for fill and flush valves that are worn and need to be replaced.

Wet areas around kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, showers that are frequently used should be check for worn out chalk that could be attracting mold growth.

Basements should be equipped and maintained with a sump pump and battery backup sump pump in case of heavy rains, flooding, or other water flow occurrence.

Maintain gutters and downspouts to keep free of obstructions that could cause backups.  Nearby trees can be the cause of gutters becoming clogged with leaves; therefore, keep trees trimmed.  Watch for birds building nest in gutters and along roofs.

Inspect roofs for loose, missing, or worn shingles.  Also check chimneys and vents for any objects that may be causing a blockage.  This is another area where birds or other small pest build nests.

Even when not occupying your home or business, maintain heat to prevent pipes from bursting.

On a larger scale, there have been times when a main water line burst has caused several streets in a business area to close down.  Usually the cause is due to aging underground pipes that should have been sufficiently maintained or replaced but were not.

Water damage happens in both residential and business dwellings.  Regular inspection and repair of some of the known areas can help prevent water damage.
