Sewer Cleanup – Dealing With The Worst Of The Worst
Any kind of water damage in your home can be a headache, but sewer cleanup has to be one of the nastiest jobs on record. I’m surprised it hasn’t been profiled by Mike Rowe on Dirty Jobs yet. If the sewage lines servicing your home become blocked, then the water (containing all sorts of appetizing material) is going to back up and overflow into your home.
Forget the damage caused by the water; you’re now dealing with bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites that can cause serious illness if exposed to your system.
With that in mind, take care to minimize skin exposure to sewage, especially if you have cuts, sores, or other open wounds. Keep any objects contaminated by sewage away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. And of course you should throw out any food or drink that has come into contact with sewage.
If you do come into contact with sewage during the sewer cleanup process, take time to properly wash your hands with soap afterwards. We can’t stress the word “clean” strongly enough.
Your health is at severe risk during any case of sewage backup cleanup. You will want to open windows and get air circulating to remove what is sure to be a disagreeable odor. And be sure to wear rubber boots, gloves, long pants and sleeves, as well as a respirator and goggles to protect your self while working in sewage contaminated waters.
As a general rule, any object that has come into contact with sewage that cannot be cleaned and /or laundered should be thrown out. Contaminated surfaces may be washed with warm soapy water and then cleaned with a bleach solution. Avoid ammonia solutions as ammonia and bleach can generate hazardous vapors.
Clothes that have been immersed in sewage can be cleaned and salvaged, but how many of us would want to wear them again? A sewage backup cleanup may provide a very opportune time to go shopping for a new wardrobe!
Carpets and rugs should likewise be thrown out and replaced. True in some cases they may be salvaged, but the time and cost involved may be prohibitive. It’s far easier to simply replace the damaged piece.
Any flooring, paneling, or wallboard should be promptly treated, cleaned, and dried thoroughly. If the damage is severe, again, they should be replaced.
