Troubleshooting The Unseen Water Damage Threat
Okay, water damage is usually fairly easy to spot. If it is wet where it shouldn’t be, it’s water damage. And even a minor spill can cause considerable long term problems if not properly treated. But what about those cases of water damage that we don’t see? What happens behind walls and above ceilings and beneath flooring all too often is not discovered until it becomes visible, by which point the damage is done.
Unseen water damage can cause mold problems which may prove almost impossible to remediate, and water speeds up the rotting of wood and rusting of metal, both of which make up the structural core of your home. So how do you fight an enemy that you can’t see, or worse, that you aren’t even aware is there?
The operative word here is “proactive”….you have to take measured, determined steps to inspect your home for signs of water damage, even going so far as to check locations that you may not readily think of.
For starters, look for soft spots in your drywall or ceiling. Soft spots are a dead giveaway for water damage, as water tends to compromise the solidity of most building materials. Sometimes soft spots will be accompanied by discoloration of the affected area, but this is not always the case. Perform periodic inspections of your walls and ceilings and see if anything feels wrong….literally.
Sniff the air. When water has come and dried within your walls, it will leave behind a musty odor. These smells are a sure giveaway for water damage, and may also signal that mold is already present. Resist the urge to just use air fresheners; they only mask the problem, they do not solve it. If mold is present, you will need to take the appropriate steps to have it removed and the affected area treated in order to prevent it from returning.
Your own health may also be a giveaway for water damage. If you find yourself getting sick more often or with a persistent cough or sneeze, then you may be dealing with mold growth somewhere in your home. You have to have the problem removed and remediated. Your health will not improve until you have done so.
You should also keep a watch over those areas of your home that are prone to water problems, such as the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room. If you see pipes or connections that are leaking, replace them, preferably with the highest grade material you can find. Yes, it may be a little more expensive (okay, a LOT more expensive) but it still beats having to clean up the damage that may be caused by a slow leak unnoticed for a prolonged period of time.
Of course your best move would be to contact a water damage restoration professional to perform an in depth examination of your home. Our technicians are well trained and experienced in these matters, we know what to look for and where to look for it, especially when it comes to areas that the average homeowner would never think to look.
An ounce of prevention may be a cliché’, but it’s still true. If you have water damage, call Restoration Local 24/7 at 1-888-443-3110 for a free estimate! Take the proactive steps necessary to protect your home today.
