Water Damage Warnings
Water damage can appear in any home for a number of reasons. To avoid this happening at 3 a.m., you want to know how this water damage can make its way into your home and become a problem. Avoid water damage before it becomes a water damage emergency!
Foundation is a frequent issue. Cracks in the foundation can lead to a major water damage issue, especially after heavy rainfall, flooding, or snowfall. Sump pumps can also create damage inside the home if not working properly. Blockage and/or overflow can quickly pile up and flow into the basement. Basement water damage is the worst because of the high risk of mold.
One of the most common areas of concern is in the pipes. Keep in mind, ‘pipes’ is a very broad term. Pipes could be in the walls, off your washer, dishwasher, bathtub, sinks, toilets, etc. All of these items have the potential to leak at some point or another. Pipes are the most common because of one factor, you can’t see them! Most of these pipes are hidden in the wall. Luckily, you should be able to see staining and softening of the wall. Also be on the lookout for frozen pipes…especially this time of year and in the months ahead!
Something as simple as lack of maintenance could also be contributing to water damage. Gutters should cleared and inspected a few times a year, and the downspouts must be facing away from the household all year. Roofing that isn’t solid can cause major water damage in the home. Make sure to inspect this area for cracks, holes, and missing shingles. It only takes a little bit of moisture to create extensive water damage and mold damage. That’s right. Mold can appear in as little as 48 hours, so please be careful!
