Water Damaged Roof

A lot of people expect water damage to be a basement oriented occurrence. That’s not always the case, folks. Water damage can occur almost anywhere in the home, even in places like the attic. You may not expect that because there aren’t pipe lines or major activity up there, but trust me, it’s possible and probably more common than you think.

Your roof is an area of the home that should be inspected regularly. With winter coming into full swing, it’s going to be a lot harder to check out. When inspecting the roof, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, just stand in your attic. Look around. Do you see any sunlight coming through? If so, you’re already susceptible for water damage up there. Light means holes or cracks. Go outside to the roof and check out the quality out there. Look at shingles themselves. Make sure none are missing and/or damaged. Damaged shingles should be replaced as soon as possible, especially when you know bad weather is approaching. Shingles should be checked out a few times throughout the winter to ensure their quality status. With all of the rain, sleet, snow, and ice that piles up, up there, you never know how long the shingles will actually last. Don’t forget to check out the gutters while you’re up there. The same rain, sleet, etc will be piling up in there as well. Blockage could cause overflow and has the potential to sink into your home.

Now, what to do when water DOES break through your barriers. Well, first thing should be calling a water damage restoration professional at our water damage restoration company. Then, I’d try to find the leak. If you can find it, there’s possibility that you could fix up the hole with caulking material, and if you catch it in time, you could even possibly skip the whole water damage restoration process. That said, if you put it off, have it checked periodically throughout the winter and maybe again in the spring.  If not, just try to keep the place as dry as possible until help arrives. If you’re not comfortable doing anything with the water damage, just call in the water damage professionals, and wait for them to arrive.
