What Is A Slab Leak?
Slab leaks are also known as foundation leaks and concrete slab leaks, and are pinhole leaks within the copper water lines that are found in the concrete flooring of a home’s foundation. Slab leaks may be indicated by unexplained increases in the water bill, wet base boards, the sound of running water, a drop in the water temperature, increased humidity in the home, bubbles in linoleum, or cracks in base boards, walls, flooring, and tiles and other water damage issues.
Because they are located in the home’s flooring, slab leaks may be difficult to diagnose. Conditions causing slab leaks include poor assembly of pipes and fittings, pipe rust, ground movement, roots, high grade pipe cleaners corroding pipes, and sewer leakage. It is always preferable to catch the leak early to prevent additional damage to the home.
If you suspect a slab leak, shut off all water to the home, read the meter, and record the time and usage. Cmoe back in an hour and take another reading. If there is any difference, then you may have a slab leak.
Slab leaks are repaired by first identifying the location of the leak using specialized listening equipment, then removing the flooring and inspecting the level of damage. The repair tech will then drill into the foundation and create an opening big enough to work in to repair the pipe.
The pipe will need to be replaced, with copper piping welded into place. The hole may be left open for a day or so to make sure the seal has taken. The foundation will then need to be repaired by filling in concrete and sealed with the surrounding slab. Allow several days to dry. The flooring will be repaired next, including walls, baseboards, and surrounding furniture.
Remember that slab leaks occur over a period of days, and it is always preferable to hire water damage restoration professionals who know how to locate these leaks, since the sooner it is targeted, the sooner your home may be restored to its former condition.
