Going on Vacation & Bursting Pipes
As hard as American’s work everyone deserves a little time off once in a while. When traveling it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of getting away from home however, it is important to make sure you do not come from paradise to a disaster site. I am referring to taking the appropriate steps to prevent water damage from taking over your home while you are away.
When leaving your home for a long amount of time during the colder seasons it is common to lower the thermostat. Lowering the temperature on your thermostat not only conserves energy but it also helps keep your heating bill down in return saving you money. When leaving on vacation it only makes sense to lower the temperature in your home because no one will be around to need the heat. However, this is where many people get into trouble when trying to save money on their heating bill.
People leave on vacation and often think the lower I set my thermostat the more money I will save on my bills. Setting the temperature too low in your home can actually cause significant problems and can cost you a lot of money in the long run. If the temperature is set too low water in the pipes of your home can freeze. When this water freezes it expands and actually breaks the pipes. Burst pipes can then release large amounts of water in the home and if owners are not around to identify the problem then water will continue to leak and further water damage will be done to the home.
To prevent busting pipes in your home it is a good idea to never set your thermostat any lower than 60 degrees Fahrenheit. This will keep pipes from freezing and you will still be able to save money on your heating bill at the same time. Overall, it is important to keep in mind that if you try to save money on your heating bill while going on vacation you can actually end up costing yourself more money if you come home to water damages. If you do find yourself in trouble be sure to call a water restoration specialist as soon as possible to get your home back to normal.
