It may also aggravate and trigger asthma attacks, reduce the ability to breathe through the constriction of air passages. It also affects the lungs, throat, nose, and skin.
Ideally, prevention of mold is the key to avoiding it, and to do so you need to dry out any and all moisture that accumulates in the homes, dry out wet areas within 48 hours, and fix all leaks and drips as soon as they are discovered. Permanently damaged items should be gotten rid of, and carpets should not be installed near areas where water damage is likely to occur.
Dehumidifiers can be used to keep areas dry, and clean gutters will prevent leakage into other areas of the home. Air conditioners and dry air heaters can be used to reduce humidity, and cold surfaces should be covered with insulation.
