What To Do After A Flood

Once a flood has struck your property, it is ill advised to simply go rushing back in once the waters have receded. Every now and again we find that it is helpful to remind folks of the most effective post flood strategies and water restoration cost.

Do not return home until the area has been deemed safe by emergency management. Listen to your local radio and TV stations for updates.  Make a note of and report any downed power lines that you happen to find during your return trip, and do not attempt to touch or move these lines.

Before entering the home, look for loose power lines, damaged gas lines, cracks or water damage foundation, or other damage which may indicate structural instability. Approach entrances carefully, and make sure porch roofs and overhangs still have all their supports.  You don’t want the home coming down around you.

Look for wild animals like snakes or raccoons that may have taken shelter in the home during the flood. Watch where you put your hands and feet.

If you smell gas or hear a hissing, noise, get out of the house and call the fire department.  Same goes for downed power lines or lines coming into contact with water. Do not approach these puddles under any circumstances.

Keep children and pets in a safe location until the home is repaired and all dangerous elements have been removed or repaired. Materials such as cleaning products, paint, batteries, contaminated fuel, and fuel containers are dangerous and should be removed. Local authorities can assist with disposal.

During cleanup, wear protective clothing, including rubber gloves, heavy duty boots, and eye protection. Make sure all food and water are safe, and discard items that have come in direct contact with water.

Do not use water that may be contaminated for bathing or washing dishes/clothes or preparing food. Contact your local health department for recommendations on boiling or treating water in your area after a disaster.
